Making an international call to Germany from the US is quite simple and does not require much effort on your part. All you would need to know is the charges associated with making the call, how to make the call and the area codes you need to use. To begin, get accustomed to the time difference from Germany to the United States. The general standardization of time is based on the GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Germany is about six hours ahead of the United States, but it may vary depending on which state you are calling. As you move far into the west of the US, the time difference will increase. Just make sure you know what time it is at your calling destination before you make the call.

Once you have the timing out of the way, you need to know the numbers you are required to dial in order to make the call. First, you need to dial an international dialling code, which is a three digit number, ‘011’. Whether you are calling Germany from the US or US from Germany, you would need to dial this code. The country’s area code is ‘49’, and this should be dialled next, which is then followed by the city code. The city code will vary for each major city in Germany. Frankfurt for example has a city code of ‘06221’. All these area codes should be dialled before you put in the phone number for the destination you are reaching. The one thing many people fail to realize is that there are cheap alternatives to making international calls.

Dialling out to an international destination from your local home phone will put up charges on your next bill. This is because all home phone service providers charge international-long distance rates when you dial directly. For these calls, you will get charged by the minute, which is then rounded up. If you would like to avoid these charges completely, you could start using Skype or any other online service to make your calls. Skype has a free and paid version, which would allow you to talk to anyone in the world. Skype is a nice feature, as the other person does not need to have internet or even a computer. Skype would allow you to dial through the internet right to the respondent’s landline phone. This is one of the reasons why millions of people have started using Skype and Skype-like services.

If you don’t have access to a computer with an internet connection, you could still benefit from other alternatives. The most common one would be dialling through the use of a calling card. If you live in the states, you would get a calling card that is made for that specific area code you are in. How does it work? A calling card has a local number displayed on it, which you will be required to dial to. The auto-message would then ask for your PIN, which is found on the card. You will be notified of how many minutes you can talk for, and you dial the destination’s number. Depending on the card you have, you may have excellent connection or an uneasy connection. Make sure with the retailer before you make the purchase for an international calling card.
