Are you raking up charges on your phone bill for making long distance calls to international destinations? The solution is here, and it is Skype. It is the new way people are getting in touch with people around the world. With Skype, you not only get to hear them, but you also can choose to start a video chat session. For a video chat session, you will be required to have Skype on both sides of the call. However, if you are just making an international call to someone’s landline or mobile phone, you could easily use Skype. Skype has become an international medium for communication and is available in several languages, for ease of use. This is somewhat like a VOIP service, which is recognized as voice over IP.

To begin using Skype for Windows, you need to download the application file and run it on your computer. By running the program, you will need to install it according to your personal preferences, choosing the language of your choice and etc. Whether you have a MAC computer or a Windows platform, you will need to have a full internet connection and a headset with a microphone. If you have plans in using the video chatting feature, you will need to get a webcam as well. In some parts of the world, the internet connection is not as strong as in other parts of the world. If the respondent only has access to a dial-up connection, it may not be a good idea to start a video chat session, as you don’t want the whole call to be buffering.

Once you have installed the Skype software, you will need to create an account with them. There will be an option to create a new account, which is completely free. This would give you the chance to create a unique ID for your account, which your friends and family would use to get in touch with you. Once you have logged into your account, you will be able to add contacts by searching for their email or unique Skype ID. In order to make a call, assure that you have your microphone and speakerphone connected. Simply click on the contact you would like to reach and click on the call button, which is usually green.

When you click on ‘Call’, the user at the other end of the phone will get a special ring. If they accept the call, a connection would be established and you can begin your call. The call could last for hours at length, as everything is completely free. You can end the call by clicking on ‘End’, which is the red button. If you would like to dial to an international number, you would then need to get access to the premium account. The free account is valid for people who have Skype on both ends. If the time zone difference affects your call, you need to make sure that one person is available to talk to at night.
